Lüdingworth (-Cuxhaven), St. Jacobi d.Ä.

Arp Schnitger and Andreas Weber 1682/83, with materials of the previous organ by Antonius Wilde 1598-1600

State of preservation: Pipes and wind chests largely original; parapet front pipes requisitioned in 1916. 1916 requiriert. Restored in 1982 (action, bellows).

The Lüdingworth organ is typical for the work of Schnitger's workshop. Like often Schnitger integrated usable material of the previous organ, here a late 16th century organ by Antonius Wilde. Thus Schnitger's organs preserved a multitude of older pipes not only a reverence of the works of important predecessors but a considerable reduction of costs.

Schnitger not only continued the tradition of the "Hamburger Prospekt" established by the workshops of  Scherer, Fritzsche and others by separating the organ divisions into different cases but also their sound qualities based on - if still of use - plenum ranks. A specification of a Schnitger organ recording the different stages of its construction also reveals the changes in organ design over the (here:) 16th to 18th centuries. Schnitger enhanced the compass from Renaissance F-a2 to the baroque C-c3, his ranks show modern sound ideas of the time shortly before 1700: new sound colours of flutes or reeds or the addition of a parapet organ with changed compound stops offer a different range of playing and sound options.
