Karl-Joseph and Rupert Riepp 1740-45
State of preservation:
1787-88 reed stops key action and wind chests renewed; further modifications 1798, 1846-48, 1860; 1902 electric actions, in 1953 electro-pneumatic action; 1987-1996 partly reconstruction to the state of 1788 by Gerhard Schmid; pipes by Riepp's organ (once 45 stops on four manuals) still exist in stops marked „*“ .
In once the biggest Riepp organ in France and biggest outside Paris only small parts of its original state have survived. Here the numerous modifications and modernisations have left only traces of Riepp's organ. At its time it was one of the most remarkable instrument in Europe, a rare combination of craftsmanship and scholarship, examined by Dom Bédos de Celles and its first organist Claude Rameau, older brother of composer and scholar Jean-Philippe Rameau, all familiar with Riepp and probably involved in the planning of this organ.
