Keyboard instruments are complex constructions of mechanics and statics. Their craftsmanship conveys a wealth of knowledge about form and condition. Typically made from various types of wood, these instruments fully meet the sound expectations of their time. The craftsmanship of their builders allows for a finely tuned whole, granting the expressive desires of their era a hidden permanence. Unlike on a few other instruments, the musician cannot further influence the sound design. The idea of expression is determined by the instrument maker and is, as it were, awakened by the player, thus transforming the technical setup into the complete transmission of the idea of the poetic.

Therefore, much that is essential is preserved in these instruments. They are witnesses to a craftsmanship culture that is intricately connected with the composition and musical concepts of their time. Understanding these conditions becomes the key to a musical-cultural knowledge that allows for the renewed appropriation of the musical idea.
